Places to go in Lancaster, PA
West End
One of Lancaster City’s most historically valued areas, the West End, has it all: old-world elegance, blossoming trees, and a picture-perfect parkside position. It’s nearly totally residential, with a terrific mix of ancient mansions, quaint row houses, and one-of-a-kind. On two square kilometers of calm lanes, there are tucked-away dwellings. Part of the neighborhood is Buchanan Park, a big grassy area, basketball courts, a playground, and a pavilion are all part of it. Amblers can watch dogs and their owners come and go all weekend long at Buchanan Park’s state-of-the-art dog park. A large playground, the city’s top sledding hill, and community gardens are all located in the park. Buchanan Park holds a number of city-wide events, including an outdoor cinema series, a carnival, and professional cycling races. Little ones may cool down in a wading pool that the Parks Department empties and refills every day during the summer. Summer is the finest season to walk across Buchanan Park to College Row on Franklin & Marshall’s campus, according to locals. The outside terrace at Blue Line Cafe (561 Old Main Dr.) is a great location to unwind after a day at the park with some delicious local food. The North Museum (400 College Ave.), a scientific museum with its own planetarium and a basement floor full of cabinet oddities to excite young and old discoverers, is a short walk from the park. Visit the Little Free Library on West End Avenue to find or share a favorite book while out walking in the West End. Beau’s Dream Dog Park is also located in Buchanan Park, the park has splash pads for both small and large dogs, including a doxie tunnel on the little dog side and a tennis ball tree that releases tennis balls on the large dog side. The North Museum of Nature and Science has been Lancaster’s place to learn about science, nature, and cultures, also located in the neighborhood. Franklin & Marshall College, TONO Group, Champion Forge, College Row are also nearby. There is also an Italian restaurant, LUCA, that mixes the culinary traditions of Italy with Lancaster County’s heritage. College Row has completely furnished apartments, individual leases, and a diverse selection of retail and eating alternatives.
