Cabbage Hill

Cabbage Hill, one of Lancaster’s downtown neighborhoods, is located in the heart of the city. But despite its central position, this ancient area has an old and peaceful appeal. Cabbage Hill residents are nice to one another and like a laid-back vibe. Its quiet streets are paved with sidewalks, making it convenient for residents to stroll from their houses to nearby public parks such as Lancaster Community Park, Culliton Park, and Brandon Park. The CabbageHill district of Lancaster, which was settled by German immigrants between 1840 and 1880, has extraordinary stability and indicates a very high prevalence of permanence among its residents. Cabbage-Hill residents formed various community, individual, religious, social, and ethnic relationships between the early 1880s and the late 1930s, allowing for the establishment of a strong neighborhood. Cabbage Hill was “typical of a tiny, conservative, working-class neighborhood founded in the middle of the past century.” Cabbage Hill has a rich history.  Before the city of Lancaster was created in 1729, Manor Roadway, Cabbage Hill’s oldest street, was a well-traveled Native American trading path. West Strawberry Street, Cabbage Hill’s second-oldest street, has a fascinating history as well. The street had a humble beginning as a dirt cowpath that marked the southwest edge of central Lancaster when James Hamilton laid out his building lots in 1729. Manor Street, which runs along Cabbage Hill’s northern boundary, now houses the neighborhood’s most prominent eateries. Japanese, Latin American, and Italian eateries coexist with laid-back late-night hangouts like O’Halloran’s Irish Pub. The enormous Lancaster County Central Park is just a few blocks away from this historic neighborhood. This big green park in the city provides city people with plenty of opportunities to exercise and get some fresh air. It has a pool, skate park, hiking trails, a golf club, and a camping area, among other outdoor recreational amenities. Cabbage Hill’s close-knit residents also come together regularly. The nearby Lancaster Recreation Center offers a variety of family-friendly activities, and local churches frequently host community events. Cabbage Hill has built a serene nature walk and a new playground behind the recreation center in recent years, offering room for neighbors and families to enjoy time outside together all year. Cabbage Hill, like many of Lancaster’s other neighborhoods, has a lot of row houses for sale. Current homes for sale range in price from under $70,000 to over $200,000. Charming smaller rooms sell for around $70,000, while properties with updated modern extensions sell for over $200,000. Also, public transit is extremely available in Cabbage Hill. Residents can easily access all of Lancaster’s jobs and amenities by catching a bus at one of the neighborhood’s many bus stops. Cabbage Hill residents have access to some nearby schools, including Hamilton Elementary School and Reynolds Middle School.
