North Museum of Nature and Science

The North Museum of Nature and Science has been Lancaster’s place to learn about science, nature, and cultures. Franklin & Marshall College founded the museum in 1953. The North Museum, named for Lancaster businessman Hugh M. North, whose estate sponsored the building’s construction, immediately established itself as a neighborhood attraction for educating youngsters about the natural world. Dedicated employees and volunteers were among the first Museum professionals to embrace a public scientific teaching concept over time. The Linnaean Society, an active group of amateur naturalists in Lancaster County, founded the Museum’s collections in the nineteenth century. They gathered specimens to document the region’s flora and wildlife, and their combined collections eventually found a home at Franklin & Marshall College. The North Museum now houses about 360,000 artifacts from a variety of disciplines, including archeology. The North Museum became a non-profit corporation in 1992, and the American Alliance of Museums re-accredited the museum for the fourth time in 2009. Only about 5% of museums in the United States have achieved this level of institutional excellence. Through educational displays, collections, and events, the North Museum aims to inspire curiosity, discovery, and lifetime respect for nature, science, and cultures. Discover the natural world at the museum’s permanent displays, which include live animals and interactive exhibits in the Nature Explorer Gallery, as well as beautiful birds and fossils. It has an extensive collection, which is housed in the southern corner of the F&M campus and has developed significantly over its 60-year history. The museum, which was renovated in 2014-15, is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The Museum charges $9.00 for adults, $8.00 for juniors (ages 3-17), and $8.00 for seniors (65 and over). SciDome Theater presentations cost an extra $4, or $7 for adults, $6 for children, and $6 for seniors for a SciDome Theater Only ticket. Children under the age of two are admitted free to the museum. For families with young children, this museum is a fantastic draw. A trip to the North Museum in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, will pique your child’s interest and curiosity. In an immersive casual learning atmosphere, your family can explore interesting exhibitions and entertaining, hands-on activities. It is open from Wednesday to Sunday, 10 AM to 3 PM. Every month, a new subject is introduced at North Museum, with the goal of educating, inspiring, and entertaining both adults and children. Special events are held on a regular basis and are centered on the family’s enjoyment of all parts of science and the environment.
