LancasterHistory, originally known as Lancaster County’s Historical Society, is an award-winning local history museum situated at 230 North President Avenue in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  It is a history museum, presidential site, research center, and arboretum. LancasterHistory is the region’s center for history and heritage and the ideal location in Central Pennsylvania for individuals to engage with the past. The Lancaster region had a crucial part in the foundation of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the formulation of the United States’ founding papers, a unique experiment in freedom and democracy. LancasterHistory offers tours of President James Buchanan’s Wheatland, history museum exhibitions, a full-service genealogical and scholarly Research Center, Museum Store, public activities, and more. LancasterHistory is a community-based, non-profit organization whose mission is to educate the public about Lancaster County’s history and its place in Pennsylvania and the United States, to advance the missions of regional historical organizations, and to promote the acquisition, preservation, and interpretation of resources representing Lancaster County’s history in the broader context of state and national history, including the Civil War. LancasterHistory engages and educates the public about the people, places, and events that defined Lancaster County in the context of Pennsylvania’s and America’s history. It acquires, conserves, exhibits, and makes accessible materials recording Lancaster County’s legacy in order to engage audiences in multi-layered tales about that past as guardians of a complicated past. Visitors to LancasterHistory can tour the 1828 Federal residence of President James Buchanan, the 15th President of the United States. Period furniture and personal items depict the tale of President James Buchanan, who tried to bring a divided nation on the verge of civil war under control. The 1828 residence will be toured by professional guides, providing the ideal experience for history fans as well as presidential history and home enthusiasts. They can also explore museum exhibitions, including the latest, Lancaster in the 1960s; search for your Lancaster County connection in our Research Center, which has more than 2 million documents, manuscripts, and books, as well as access to the Library Edition of Ancestry.com and a variety of other databases and resources; and explore LancasterHistory grounds, which include the Louise Arnold Tanger Arboretum and Dwarf Conifer Garden.. The LancasterHistory Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wheatland tours begin at 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., tours every 30 minutes. Reservations are highly recommended.
